Aum bhur bhuvah svah
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dhimahi
Dhiyo yo nah pracodayat

"We meditate on the transcendental glory of
the Deity Supreme,
who is inside the heart of the earth,
inside the life of the sky,
and inside the soul of the heaven.
May He stimulate and illumine our minds. "

Indian Culture- Vivekananda Kendra

Musk Deer is having fragrance in its navel region, but is not aware and so goes about smelling and tilling garbage. We Indians are also like the Musk Deer. We are not aware of our own traditions and heritage and seek inspiration from elsewhere. India has a rich culture of which every Indian should be proud.

When we think of the reconstruction of a Nation, we must identify the foundations upon which we are going to build the Nation. If the foundation is strong, the building will be strong. Hence we must build our nation on the impregnable foundation of our culture. Culture is the soul of a Nation. Before we define the term 'Culture', it is worthwhile removing some misconceived ideas and at the same time, providing some clarifications. This will be attempted in the succeeding paragraphs.

Culture- Its Misconception

There is a lot of misconception about the word Culture. This one word has been misused too often during last several years. Several cultural shows are held in public, schools and colleges. These have hardly any element of culture. In fact, they are characterized by the lack of it. There are also cultural exchanges with other nations which are of entertainment value and nothing more.

Culture Defined

  • Culture is a characteristic way of life, inspired by fundamental values, according to which people live.
  • It is the sum total of the values, expressed through art, literature, religion, social institutions and behavior, over acts of individuals and mass action inspired by collective urges.
